Patna: Anger and anxiety have spread around a girls’ hostel in Patna after the death of a NEET aspirant whose post-mortem report indicated she had been assaulted, prompting police action against the hostel management and leaving other residents struggling to vacate the premises.
The student was staying at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in the Chitragupta Nagar area of the city. Following the incident, the hostel was shut, and police said legal proceedings were under way. However, several students and their families who arrived to take them home said they were unable to enter the building to collect essential belongings such as books, clothes and personal items.
Parents waiting outside the hostel said they had travelled to Patna to bring their daughters back, citing fears for their safety after what they described as a “heinous crime”. Some students told reporters they no longer felt secure staying at the hostel and wanted to leave immediately.
“We came to collect our children’s books and clothes,” one parent said. “How will they continue studying without their books? The gate is closed and there is no response from inside. We were told the hostel has been sealed, but there is no visible seal.”
Students echoed the concerns. One resident, who said she had lived at the hostel for about six months, said she had returned to collect her belongings but could not get inside. “After this incident, I don’t want to stay here at all,” she said. Another student said police had advised them to go to the police station. “Our belongings are here,” she said. “We don’t understand why we should go elsewhere.”
Police officials said the premises had been secured as part of the investigation and that access would be regulated. Authorities have not yet said when students will be allowed to retrieve their belongings.
