Patna: Patna is set to become home to the country’s first indoor botanical garden, with the Bihar government planning a climate-controlled facility near JP Ganga Path. Inspired by Singapore’s renowned indoor gardens, the project is expected to provide visitors with year-round access to rare and exotic plant species regardless of outdoor weather conditions.
The proposed garden will be developed on a five-acre site adjacent to JP Ganga Path. According to the project plan, the facility will create an artificial ecosystem where temperature, humidity, lighting and irrigation are regulated to support a wide variety of plants.
Climate-Controlled Environment for Rare Plants
Unlike conventional botanical gardens, the indoor botanical garden will be housed beneath a transparent roof made of tempered glass or a high-strength transparent material that allows natural sunlight to enter while maintaining a controlled internal climate.
The environment inside the facility will be managed using modern technology, enabling the cultivation of plant species from different climatic regions. Rare medicinal herbs and other specialised plant varieties from India and abroad are also expected to be displayed.
Project Planned Near JP Ganga Path
The Bihar State Road Development Corporation has finalised the project’s plan. The location near JP Ganga Path is expected to make the garden easily accessible for residents and tourists visiting the riverfront.
The garden will include landscaped walkways, seating areas and visitor amenities to enhance the experience. As a specialised attraction, entry to the botanical garden will be ticketed.
Focus on Tourism and Environmental Education
The proposed facility is expected to serve as both a tourist attraction and an educational centre. School and college students visiting the garden will have the opportunity to learn about biodiversity, rare plant species and the importance of environmental conservation.
Officials also expect the garden to encourage people to grow indoor and household plants by showcasing species that can be cultivated in residential spaces.
A First-of-Its-Kind Project
If completed as planned, the Patna indoor botanical garden will be the first facility of its kind in India. By combining advanced climate-control technology with botanical conservation, the project aims to expand public access to plant diversity while promoting sustainable urban greenery and environmental awareness.
