Patna: The dream of metro travel for the people of Patna is set to become a reality on October 6, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurates the city’s first metro service between New Patliputra Bus Terminal and Bhootnath Station on the Red Line’s primary corridor. The Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Metro Corridor One, which will include six underground stations and a 9.35-kilometre tunnel from Patna Junction to Rukunpura.
The Metro Rail Safety Commissioner (CMRS), Janak Kumar Garg, granted the official safety clearance for the Patna Metro on Saturday, following an inspection of the depot, stations, and a successful trial run on September 29. With this, the Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) and the Urban Development and Housing Department finalised the inauguration date, marking a milestone in the state’s urban transport journey.
In its initial phase, the metro will operate at a maximum speed of 40 km/h, with each three-coach train accommodating up to 900 passengers per trip. The coaches, branded “Patna Metro,” will showcase Bihar’s rich art, knowledge, and culture through visuals of the Golghar, Mahavir Temple, Lord Mahavir, and Madhubani paintings, offering a blend of modernity and heritage.

Corridor One, estimated to cost Rs 2,565.80 crore, will connect Rukunpura, Raja Bazaar, Zoo, Vikas Bhawan, Vidyut Bhawan, and Patna Junction, featuring six underground stations and an 11-kilometre tunnel network. Construction will be completed within 42 months by two contracted agencies.
The first package covers the stretch from Rukunpura ramp to Vikas Bhawan, while the second package will extend the tunnel to Patna Junction via Mithapur ramp, costing Rs 1,418.30 crore.
Hailing the project as a transformative step for Bihar, Urban Development and Housing Minister Jibesh Kumar said, “Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the Patna Metro on October 6. This is a major gift for Bihar that will revolutionise Patna’s transport system.”
Once operational, the Patna Metro is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and provide residents with a faster and more sustainable mode of travel across the state capital.
