Patna: The Patna Metro Rail project has received a fresh financial boost, with the Bihar government approving Rs 628.32 crore for construction work during the 2026-27 financial year. The funding has been made available under the central government’s Special Assistance Scheme for Capital Investment.
According to the Urban Development and Housing Department, the funds will be routed through Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL) and used for core construction activities.
Centre And State To Fund 40% Of Project
The Patna Metro project is being financed through a combination of contributions from the central and state governments and loans from external financial agencies.
Under the existing financing structure, the Centre and Bihar government each contribute 20% of the total project cost. The remaining 60% is to be raised through loans from external financial institutions.
The state government periodically releases funds to meet its share of the project’s financial requirements. The latest allocation comes from a larger package approved for Bihar under the central assistance scheme.
On July 23, 2026, the Union Ministry of Finance approved projects worth a total of Rs 2,925 crore for Bihar under the special assistance scheme. An initial instalment of Rs 2,628.32 crore was released, with Rs 628.32 crore from that amount earmarked for the Patna Metro project.
Money To Support Core Construction
The new allocation is intended to sustain construction activity through PMRCL.
The project has required substantial investment from multiple sources, with the financing arrangement designed to combine government support with external borrowing.
The latest funding is therefore more than a routine budgetary release: it provides additional resources to keep construction moving while the project progresses towards the introduction of metro services in Patna.

DMRC To Handle Operations And Maintenance
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been entrusted with operating and maintaining the priority corridor of the Patna Metro.
The estimated maintenance cost for a period of two years and eight months is Rs 2,179.37 crore. The expenditure is intended to cover the technical and maintenance requirements needed to ensure the metro system functions smoothly once services begin.
The arrangement brings together Bihar’s investment in the infrastructure with DMRC’s operational and maintenance expertise. With construction requiring sustained funding, the latest allocation is intended to ease financial pressure and help maintain momentum on the ground.
