Patna: Construction on Patna’s metro network is gathering pace, with the city’s first underground line reaching a key milestone. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has successfully arrived at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) station, marking a significant advance in the development of the PC-3 underground corridor.
Officials described the achievement as a “crucial step” for the city’s metro project, which is expected to be operational across up to five stations by the end of December. The PC-3 corridor, which runs through the heart of Patna, is among the most technically challenging stretches of the network.

The TBM, launched from Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in 2023, has steadily progressed along its underground route, passing Rajendra Nagar, Patna University, PMCH, Gandhi Maidan, and Akashvani, and is now advancing towards Patna Junction. The successful arrival at PMCH is expected to accelerate tunnelling work and facilitate smoother construction at upcoming stations.
Meanwhile, preparatory work for track laying in the underground section between Rajendra Nagar and Patna University has begun, with a tender recently issued. Soil testing is also underway along the proposed tunnel route from Rukanpura to Patna Junction. Boring at approximately 12 locations along Nehru Path, at depths of up to 50 metres, is helping engineers assess soil strength and depth. Samples from each site are being analysed in laboratories to inform the final route and safety measures for the tunnel.
