Patna: Bihar’s first state-of-the-art crematorium complex has commenced operations at Bans Ghat in Patna, marking a significant upgrade in the city’s funeral infrastructure. Built at a cost of Rs 89.40 crore under the Patna Smart City project, the facility has been dedicated to public service from today.
The modern crematorium was inaugurated with a traditional Guru Puja ceremony. Authorities said the project aims to provide dignified, organised and environmentally responsible cremation services while reducing the inconvenience faced by bereaved families.
Managed by Isha Outreach
The operation and maintenance of the crematorium complex have been entrusted to Isha Outreach (Kayanta Sthanam) for a period of five years. The arrangement follows an agreement between the Patna Municipal Corporation and the Isha Foundation.
The Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO), which executed the project, will oversee maintenance-related responsibilities during the same period.
Capacity for Simultaneous Cremation of 10 Bodies
The new facility has the capacity to conduct the simultaneous cremation of up to 10 bodies.
The complex includes four electric cremation furnaces procured from Gujarat and six modern wood-based cremation furnaces manufactured in Bihar. According to officials, these systems generate around 90 per cent less pollution than traditional cremation methods and require significantly lower wood consumption.
A mortuary freezer facility has also been established within the premises to enable safe preservation of bodies when required.
Online Booking and Funeral Essentials Available
To improve service delivery and reduce waiting times, the crematorium has introduced an online slot booking system supported by dedicated software.
Officials said the digital platform is expected to help families avoid long queues and streamline the cremation process.
The complex also houses a dedicated facility near the Moksha Dwar where around 45 funeral-related items, including dhotis, sarees, ghee and sandalwood, will be available at fixed rates.
Additional Amenities for Visitors
The crematorium premises include a canteen and commercial outlets to serve visitors and family members.
Food, beverages and other essential services will be provided at regulated prices, ensuring access to basic facilities within the complex during funeral ceremonies.
Officials said the integrated approach is intended to offer a more organised and humane experience while modernising cremation services in the state capital.
