Begusarai: A staggering Rs 78 crore remains unclaimed in various bank accounts across Begusarai district, prompting authorities to initiate efforts to locate the rightful owners. The unclaimed deposits have accumulated in 194,212 inactive bank accounts, now transferred to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Depositor Education and Awareness Fund.
District Lead Bank Manager Prashant Kumar Mishra said that despite banks maintaining these balances for years, no claimants have stepped forward. To address this, the RBI has directed banks to help depositors or their beneficiaries recover the funds.
In line with this nationwide initiative, an awareness camp titled “Aapki Kaandi Aapki Adhikar” (Your Capital, Your Right) will be held on December 5 at the National Self-Employment Training Institute (RSETI) in Kankaul, Begusarai. The camp is being organized by UCO Bank under the guidance of the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, and the State Level Bankers’ Committee, Bihar.
Mishra said the drive aims to ensure people are aware of their unclaimed financial assets and understand the process to recover them. “After verification, the deposited amount will be returned to the rightful holders. Our goal is to help beneficiaries reclaim the entire Rs 78 crore lying idle in these accounts,” he added.
Officials have urged residents to check whether they or their family members may have dormant accounts, fixed deposits, or other forgotten financial instruments and to visit the camp with valid documents to initiate claim procedures.
Banks hope the initiative will lead to a significant number of recoveries, ensuring the money reaches its rightful owners rather than remaining untouched in the system.
