Patna: The proposed second expansion of the Sonepur Planning Area has moved a step closer after stakeholders unanimously approved the inclusion of Maker and Amanour blocks, a move that will expand the planning region to nearly 800 square kilometres.
The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by Saran District Magistrate Vaibhav Srivastava at Buddha Mandir on Monday.
According to officials, the proposal will now be forwarded to the Urban Development and Housing Department for final approval and publication in the official gazette.
Planning Area To Cover Nearly 800 Sq Km
Once notified by the state government, the expanded Sonepur Planning Area will cover approximately 798.94 sq km, incorporating 575 revenue villages and three urban local bodies.
Officials said the expansion would make Sonepur one of the largest notified planning areas in Bihar.
The proposal follows the resolution of claims and objections received from the public during the consultation process.
Expansion Follows Earlier Notification
The Sonepur Planning Area was first notified in 2023.
Its jurisdiction was expanded to around 600 sq km in 2025, bringing Dariyapur, Dighwara, Sonepur, Garkha and Parsa blocks within the planning area.
The latest proposal adds nearly 200 sq km by incorporating Maker and Amanour, with the government aiming to facilitate planned urban development across a larger region.

‘New Patna’ Vision
Joining the meeting virtually from Delhi, Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy welcomed the expansion and said the enlarged planning area had the potential to develop into a “New Patna” in the future.
He said the implementation of the master plan should safeguard the interests of local farmers while ensuring their participation in the region’s industrial and urban development.
Infrastructure Planning To Begin
During the meeting, District Magistrate Vaibhav Srivastava directed officials to begin preparing detailed maps for the newly added areas and draft infrastructure development plans.
Officials said the preparatory work would enable construction and development activities to begin quickly once the proposal receives final approval from the state government.
