Patna: A tiger that killed a farmer near Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve was caught within 24 hours of the attack. The animal was captured by the forest department and will now be taken to Patna Zoo for treatment. The incident happened on Monday in West Champaran district, where the tiger killed 55-year-old Mathura Mahato while he was working in his field near Ghoraghaat Khairhani village.
The tiger, found to be 12 years old and weak, is believed to have come from Nepal’s Madi forest. Officials say it likely wandered into the area in search of easy prey because it could no longer hunt well. During the rescue, the tiger injured a forest worker named Vijay Oraon.
The animal was hiding in a sugarcane field near the site of the attack. Forest teams used drones to locate it and then sedated it with a tranquiliser gun. It was loaded into a rescue vehicle and examined by veterinary doctors.
Officials say the tiger will be kept in Patna Zoo for better care. The rescue team included senior forest officers, veterinary experts and biologists, who worked through the night to capture the animal safely.
