Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its candidate for the Bankipur Assembly by-election, replacing its earlier nominee, Abhishek Kumar. The late change has brought the 32-year-old organisational leader into one of Bihar’s most closely watched electoral contests.
Sinha will contest against Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor, who is making his electoral debut. The by-election is expected to be one of the most closely followed political contests in the state.
Who Is Neeraj Kumar Sinha?
Neeraj Kumar Sinha is a BJP leader from Nawada district who has spent several years working within the party organisation before entering electoral politics.
A graduate by qualification, Sinha is unmarried. According to the BJP, he has built his political career through organisational responsibilities rather than elected office.
His family has a long association with the BJP and its ideological predecessor, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
Family’s Association With Jana Sangh
Sinha’s uncle, Narendra Bharti, was an active Jana Sangh worker. After his death in 1984, a local BJP Mandal was named in his memory.
Neeraj Kumar Sinha has remained associated with the Narendra Bharti Mandal, a connection that party leaders cite as reflecting his long-standing organisational involvement.

Why Did The BJP Choose Him?
The BJP has described Sinha’s candidature as an organisational decision, highlighting his experience within the party structure.
Political observers, however, also view the decision in the context of Bankipur’s electoral demographics. Sinha belongs to the Kayastha community, which has a sizeable presence in the constituency.
Former Bankipur MLA and former Bihar minister Nitin Navin, who also belongs to the Kayastha community, has represented the constituency in the past. Political circles have often spoken of Sinha’s proximity to Nitin Navin, although the BJP has not attributed the candidature to any individual leader.
High-Stakes Electoral Contest
The Bankipur by-election has gained added political significance because it will mark the first electoral contest for Prashant Kishor as a candidate.
With the BJP fielding a relatively young organisational leader against the Jan Suraaj founder, the contest is expected to draw attention beyond the constituency as parties test their strategies ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
Political analysts believe the outcome will be closely watched as an indicator of the evolving political landscape in the state.
