Patna: The upcoming Bihar Assembly elections are set to cast a spotlight on Mokama, a constituency long synonymous with political muscle and influence. The 2025 contest promises to be particularly intense, pitting veteran politician Anant Singh against Suraj Bhan Singh, a figure whose reach extends well beyond the constituency.
Anant Singh, who has dominated Mokama for nearly two decades, has won the seat five times since 2005. His victories span party lines—from the Janata Dal (United) in his early wins to the Rashtriya Janata Dal in 2020, as well as a successful independent campaign. However, Singh was disqualified in 2022 following a conviction under the Arms Act, after which his wife, Neelam Devi, retained the seat for the family under the RJD banner, underscoring the enduring influence of the Singh family.
Suraj Bhan Singh, meanwhile, is exploring a new political path. Known nationally and locally as a “Dada” of Bihar politics, his sway covers Munger, Nawada, Patna, and Ballia, as well as Mokama itself. Following internal disputes within the Lok Janshakti Party, he is reportedly aligning with the RJD, with his wife, former MP Veena Devi, potentially contesting the seat. Singh met RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav recently to discuss the development, which could significantly alter the electoral dynamics.
Mokama’s electorate is a complex mix of Bhumihar, Yadav, Kurmi, and Extremely Backward Class voters. Anant Singh has historically drawn support from the Bhumihar community while building inroads into other groups. The entry of Suraj Bhan Singh and Veena Devi could therefore test caste equations, local alliances, and organisational strength in ways unseen in recent elections.
