Patna: The Bihar government has announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening the fisheries sector and improving access to fresh fish for consumers across the state.
Under the initiative, ‘Fresh Catch’ kiosks are being developed in municipal corporation areas, including Patna. The kiosks are being modelled on Sudha Dairy outlets and are expected to provide organised retail access to fresh fish.
Officials said the initiative is intended to improve fish marketing systems while supporting fish farmers and traders.
Modern fish markets planned in districts and panchayats
Under the Chief Minister Fisheries Marketing Scheme, the government is constructing modern fish markets in 12 blocks and 31 panchayats across Bihar.
The state government said the move is aimed at strengthening fisheries infrastructure, improving market access and increasing incomes for fish farmers.
Authorities expect the initiative to create additional employment opportunities linked to fish production, transport and retail trade.
Over 6,400 vehicles distributed to fish farmers
During the 2025–26 financial year, the government distributed 6,449 vehicles to fish farmers to support transportation and faster delivery of fish to markets.
Officials said the vehicles would help reduce delays in supply chains and improve the availability of fresh fish in urban and rural markets.
The government has stated that modernisation of fisheries transport and marketing remains a priority under its rural livelihood programmes.
Training programmes for fish farmers
According to official figures, more than 68,890 fish farmers have received training in modern fisheries practices.
Of these, 51,305 farmers were trained within Bihar, while 17,585 received training at institutions outside the state.
The programmes covered modern fish farming techniques, including biofloc systems and advanced production methods.
Exposure visits to modern fisheries units
The government said more than 47,000 fish farmers have participated in exposure and study tours to developed wetlands and biofloc units under a fisheries outreach programme.
Participants were introduced to modern construction techniques, production systems and management practices used in commercial fish farming.
Officials said the programme is intended to improve productivity and expand market-oriented fisheries activity in Bihar.
