Patna: Rural landscapes across Bihar are undergoing a dramatic transformation as the construction of roads and bridges under a state scheme, supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), nears completion. According to the Rural Works Department, more than 75% of the target for 2,025 roads and 1,236 bridges has been achieved, with the remaining projects in their final stages. The initiative, which carries an investment of Rs 5,989.85 crore, has significantly reduced the distance between remote villages and towns, providing a fresh boost to the state’s rural economy.
The department released a district-wise progress report on Tuesday, revealing that 1,863 of the 2,025 planned roads have already been completed, covering 4,825 of the total 5,254.49 kilometers. Meanwhile, 917 bridges have been constructed, with the remaining 319 set for completion in the coming months.
Nalanda leads in road construction
Nalanda district has emerged as a frontrunner, with 199 of 214 approved roads completed, covering over 370 kilometers against a target of 396.149 kilometers. Of the 67 planned bridges, 59 are now operational and carrying heavy traffic. Gaya has also made substantial progress, completing 120 of 129 roads and 46 of 57 bridges, covering 365.782 kilometers out of the targeted 395.245 kilometers.
In Patna district, 157 of 167 rural roads have been completed, covering 329.708 kilometers of the 363.767-kilometer target. Forty-six out of 54 bridges are already in use, while other districts, including Aurangabad, Darbhanga, East Champaran, Munger, Rohtas, Jehanabad, Sitamarhi, and Muzaffarpur, have completed hundreds of kilometers of rural roads. Projects in Jamui, Madhubani, Samastipur, Gopalganj, Kishanganj, and Nawada are also nearing completion.
Officials say the enhanced road and bridge network is not only improving access for rural communities but also fostering economic activity, creating opportunities for trade, transport, and local development.
