Patna: The Bihar Education Department has made it mandatory for all government school teachers to join departmental WhatsApp channels as part of a new initiative to improve the quality of education and enhance students’ learning outcomes across the state.
In a directive issued on Tuesday, Primary Education Director Vikram Virkar said the channels would serve as a platform for academic mentoring, teacher support and the rapid sharing of educational resources. Teachers will be expected to play a more active role as mentors and guides for students while promoting quality classroom instruction.
The initiative covers teachers at the primary, secondary and higher secondary levels, who will mentor students in their respective classes and contribute to their academic development through regular guidance and support.
Four WhatsApp Channels Created
To streamline communication and academic support, the department has established four separate state-level WhatsApp channels for students from Classes 1 to 8.
These include the Foundational Stage for Classes 1 and 2, the Preparatory Stage for Classes 3 to 5, the Middle Stage for Classes 6 to 8, and a dedicated channel for Complex Resource Centres (CRCs).
District and block-level education officials, headmasters, teachers, nodal lecturers and personnel associated with Complex Resource Centres have been instructed to join the relevant channels through QR codes or designated links.
Academic Resources to Be Shared
According to the department, the channels will be used to share academic activities, mentoring programme updates, training materials and departmental instructions in real time.
Officials believe the system will help teachers access important information promptly and support efforts to improve learning outcomes among students.
Officials Asked to Ensure Full Participation
The Education Department has directed all District Education Officers (DEOs) and District Programme Officers (DPOs) to ensure 100% participation of eligible personnel in the initiative.
They have also been instructed to regularly monitor implementation and review the effectiveness of the programme to ensure its objectives are achieved.
