Patna: A modern makhana processing and manufacturing unit will be established at Industrial Area (IA) Donar in Darbhanga with an investment of Rs 27.44 crore, marking a fresh push towards scaling up Bihar’s traditional food processing sector.
The project has been approved for Makhayo Foods Pvt. Ltd. under the state’s industrial facilitation framework.
Project Details
The unit will be developed across 2.20 acres of land at IA Donar. It will focus on makhana processing, packaging and value addition to improve market competitiveness and supply chain efficiency.
Makhayo Foods Pvt. Ltd. is expected to modernise production systems and expand access to domestic and international markets through the proposed facility.
Approval Process
The proposal was cleared during a meeting of the Project Clearance Committee (PCC) of the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority.
The meeting was chaired by Kundan Kumar, where multiple industrial proposals across Bihar were reviewed and approved, including land allotments and plug-and-play infrastructure allocations.
Employment and Economic Impact
The project is projected to generate around 300 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Officials said this is expected to benefit local youth and strengthen rural livelihoods linked to agriculture and food processing.
The unit is also expected to enhance value addition in the makhana supply chain and improve income opportunities for farmers engaged in cultivation and primary processing.
Government Perspective
Industries Minister Shreyasi Singh said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on integrating traditional sectors with modern industrial systems.
She noted that the GI Tag for ‘Mithila Makhana’ in 2022 has strengthened its identity and opened wider market opportunities for producers across Bihar.
Officials from the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority said the state continues to prioritise an investor-friendly environment through infrastructure support, simplified approvals and policy facilitation to accelerate agro-based industrial growth.
