Patna: Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna was thrown into turmoil on Wednesday after an anonymous email alleging ragging in the girls’ hostel landed in the institution’s official inbox, prompting an emergency meeting of the anti-ragging committee.
According to college officials, the message—addressed to the principal and hostel warden—claimed that a first-year MBBS student had been subjected to ragging, and included a 35-page attachment detailing the alleged misconduct. News of the email spread quickly, causing confusion both on campus and in the hostels.
Principal Dr Usha Kumari convened an immediate meeting of the anti-ragging committee, attended by several heads of department and other members. First-year MBBS students were summoned and questioned about the claims. All students denied knowledge of the email and rejected any suggestion of ragging or inappropriate behaviour in the hostel.
Following preliminary questioning and review of the attached complaint, the committee concluded that the allegations were baseless. Dr Kumari said the email appeared to have been sent by an unidentified individual and may be the work of a former student attempting mischief. “The matter is being investigated, and we are trying to trace the source of the email,” she said.
She added that NMCH has repeatedly briefed students during cap ceremonies and in classrooms about strict prohibitions on ragging and the serious action that follows if such behaviour is proven anywhere on campus, including the hospital and hostels.
