Bhagalpur/Patna:Light vehicles will be allowed to use the Bailey bridge constructed on Vikramshila Setu from Sunday, Bihar Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin Shailendra said, following a review of the bridge’s condition and readiness for traffic.
The bridge, which connects Bhagalpur and Naugachia, is considered a key transport link in eastern Bihar. The decision comes after a site inspection and review by senior government officials.
Limited traffic to begin from 7 June
According to the minister, only small and light vehicles will be permitted to use the Bailey bridge in the initial phase. Overloaded and heavy vehicles will not be allowed.
He said the decision was taken keeping public convenience and safety in mind. The state government reviewed the construction status and operational preparedness before granting approval for traffic movement.
Increased traffic expected during Shravani Mela
The minister noted that traffic volumes on the bridge are expected to rise during the Shravani Mela next month. The approaching monsoon season and the possibility of flooding were also factors considered while planning traffic management and repair schedules.
Major restoration work from September
The government plans to resume work on a truss bridge structure on Vikramshila Setu from September 15, using updated engineering techniques.
Before construction begins, three damaged slabs on the bridge will be cut and removed, according to the minister.
He said all categories of vehicles are expected to be allowed on the bridge again from November 30, subject to the completion of the scheduled works.
Traffic closure planned during repair phase
The minister said traffic movement on Vikramshila Setu will remain suspended during the period of major repair work between September and November.
Authorities are expected to issue detailed traffic advisories closer to the commencement of the restoration phase.
Statewide review of bridges underway
The Road Construction Department is also carrying out a review of the condition of bridges and culverts across Bihar.
The minister said maintenance works are being identified and scheduled where required. He added that the government is examining the use of advanced technologies to strengthen bridge safety and monitoring systems across the state.
