Patna: As Durga Puja comes to an end, people in Patna are preparing to immerse the idols of Goddess Durga, a ritual known as Visarjan. This year, the immersion can be done until 2:56 pm on Vijayadashami, October 2, 2025. Spiritual guide Pandit Kamalapati Tripathi Pramod explained that before the idol is immersed, devotees should thank the Goddess for visiting their homes. They perform the Shodashopar puja, offer roli, flowers, sweets, and perform aarti. Sindoor is applied to the idol as part of the tradition. The idol is then carried to a holy river or pond, accompanied by drums, cymbals, and chants praising Mata Rani.
The Kalash, a sacred pot used during the puja, also plays an important role in the ritual. Water from the Kalash should be sprinkled throughout the house, and any remaining water should be poured on a Peepal tree. The coconut and coins kept in the Kalash can be tied in a red cloth and placed in the home temple or safe. This is believed to keep the Goddess’s blessings in the house and increase prosperity. Devotees also offer fruits, rice grains, clothes, and vermilion to the Goddess, applying it to family members as a sign of protection.
Vijayadashami is not just a ritual; it carries a deep meaning. The immersion marks the farewell of Goddess Durga as she returns to Mount Kailash to join Lord Shiva. It reminds people of the victory of good over evil and encourages them to stay positive, patient, and kind. Families celebrate together, pray for blessings, and follow the rituals carefully to ensure that the Goddess’s grace remains in their lives.
There are several steps to follow during Visarjan. The idol should be lifted while singing chants and playing drums. The Kalash and its contents should be immersed in the water, while water from it is sprinkled at home and on family members. The coconut from the Kalash can be given to a married woman in the house or kept in the home temple. Coins can be tied in red cloth and kept safely. Akshat rice grains can be hung at the main entrance to ward off negative energy, and barley sown during the festival should be placed on the ear and then immersed. Following these simple steps ensures the rituals are completed with devotion and care.
Vijayadashami is a time of devotion, celebration, and gratitude. By performing these rituals correctly, devotees in Patna can bid farewell to Goddess Durga respectfully, while bringing her blessings of happiness, prosperity, and protection into their homes.
